Undershirts-Unnecessary layers

There are a lot of fashion styles I love pre-1934, but undershirts are not one of them. Thank you Clark Gable for It Happened One Night and showing the world how sexy it is to wear just one shirt at a time. I know you think you may get sweat stains or deodorant stains on your super cool t-shirt so you wear an undershirt but simply buy different deodorant. Undershirts make you hotter (causing you to sweat more) and aesthetically they are unappealing. The T-shirt originated from people wearing just their undershirt (with out the outer shirt) so really it doesn’t make sense to wear an undershirt under a undershirt. Also for button down shirts an undershirt is just unnecessary . That little white that sticks out from your collar is not pretty and overall the layering makes you look thicker. Would you put two cases on your iPhone to protect it better? No you wouldn’t so just say no to wearing two shirts at a time.

Preach sista I totally feel you on this one! The modern man needs a break from Sunday football and learn a thing or two on mens fashion history, it will help them in the long run!

Generally agree, except that undershirts in cold climates can be helpful for warmth. Once I moved back to CA (and a good part of the time before), I dispensed with them. They also made a lot more sense pre-1950 or so when Americans didn’t bathe every day. BTW, don’t confuse “button-up” shirts (i.e., dress or sport shirts with a collar and buttons running down the entire front) with “button-down” shirts (a type of button-up shirt made popular by Brooks Bros. where the collar lapels roll and button down to the chest). 🙂

Margaux, I completely agree with the undershirt. Haven’t worn an undershirt since like forever. Same goes for underpants too. Go commando!

Totally with you on this one! I hate how the undershirt sticks out on button down shirts too. You gave the right words / phrase for it… “aesthetically unappealing” 🙂

  5. Personally I like to wear undershirts. To me they are more comfortable against my skin than the dress shirt, even dress shirts of high quality cotton.

If you do wear undershirts, you can mitigate the “crew-view” problem with a v-neck!
